Take These Homemade Lip Balm Recipes For a Spin

November 19th, 2008 BY jennl | 45 Comments

Looking for a new project to do or
just simply want to make your own eco-friendly lip balm? Homemade lip
balm is a lot easier than one may think. To make these lip balms
(thanks to lemelange.com) recipes truly eco-friendly simply replace
the oils, such as almond oil with organic almond oil. Have fun
everyone!

Recipes For Making Lip Balm:

40% of your recipe should be any
cosmetic grade oil that is liquid at room temperature (sweet almond,
apricot kernel, avocado, grapeseed, hemp seed, macadamia, olive,
sunflower, etc.)

25% of your recipe should be any
cosmetic grade oil that is solid at room temperature (coconut,
lanolin, palm, mango butter, shea butter, etc.)

20% of your recipe should be cosmetic
grade Beeswax (white or yellow, pellets or solid blocks)

15% of your recipe should be any
cosmetic grade oil that is brittle at room temperature (cocoa butter,
palm kernel, etc.)

The above measurements are “weights”,
so you can calculate your own recipe in ounces, grams, or pounds.

Directions:

melt all carrier oils, honey, beeswax
and butters over low heat. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then
add the flavored oils, essential oils, vitamin E, etc. Stir until all
ingredients are blended well and pour into containers. The easiest
way to do this, is to purchase those inexpensive “pointy”
paper drink cups (like the kind on the side of a water cooler). Cut
off the point and use it as a funnel. Then you can just toss them out
when you’re finished!

You may have to “play around”
with these recipes by adding a tiny bit more or less of the beeswax
pellets. As with any of these recipes, if it comes out too soft, add
a few more beeswax pellets; if it’s too hard, add a little more
almond oil (or other oil). They’re really hard to mess up, so enjoy
yourself and have fun.

I find this very interesting and I love the idea. This way I know exactly what I am eating off my lips. :-) , it’s just to source the items now.

Wow. These recipes actually seem so simple. I think I will try it and see how easy it really is (or isn’t.)

You refer to palm oil. I cannot believe an eco website refers to the use of an oil that creates such devastation of the Indonesian rainforests, not to mention the habitat of Orangutans and other rare species. Please remove all references to palm oil.

You know you do not need to use ”Palm oil” that is produced commercially. If you happen to live in a hot climate like phoenix you can actually make your own. If all references are removed I would not be able to use the product made in my backyard. I do use it in my soap making but many people say the same thing about my use of it….but if it comes from my own trees (and keep those chickens handy for the scorpions). Then I guess i should dig them up and plant something else instead.

By the by….you really do not need to kill the tree to get the oil….It just takes a bit more work.

I use certified organic palm kernel oil, and the company I buy it from adheres to strict environmental and state laws. They make sure that it is sustainably harvested. Not all palm kernel oil is from a rainforest being deforested.

You refer to existence. I can not believe a eco website refers to the use something that actually exists, not to mention all this stuff that may or may not apply because I didn’t really think it through. Please remove everything now.

I have been looking for sane, eco-friendly lip gloss recipes for a while, and had given up.

I can’t wait to try these out with a little mineral powder for color.

    Thanks

I am so glad to have found this article. Commercial lip balms are often full of scary preservatives and petroleum based ingredients. Even one of the natural brands I was using has started adding benzyl-based preservatives.

  6. SageMother
    10

Actually, these are basically the same ingredients in most commercial lip balms. Often, ingredients are listed by their chemical names and not their common names.

Some product lines charge more for the same ingredients, counting on people not knowing this. It is a great marketing maneuver.

These would be great to make for some nice Holiday presents; made in bigger batches to be made into individual sizes, an inexpensive and caring gift.

I never would have thought of vitamin E as a preservative! Where can you research the different oils and their consistencies? I’d like to try this, but don’t know that much about it.

I know this response is about two years late but, maybe someone will find it useful!!! Being new to essentiel oils and organics, researching things that I have found intrigueing and wish to make, I found the following web-site that has allowed me to answer alot of my own questions.(www.aromaweb.com). Hope it helps!!!

Yes, the website you mention is a very good source, especially with you being new with the implementation of 100% Pure Essential Oils.

One item I would like to bring forward to you, especially if you plan to sell…You need to make sure you can obtain/have handy MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for every Essential Oil you compound with.

Note: Never put an undiluted 100% Pure Essential Oil directly on the skin.

You will also need to research “labeling”. Your labels must contain certain information to keep you in compliance with certain law. If you make “any” kind of theraputic claim to your product the labeling and classification then change to an addition in compliance.

        Good luck and good day.

Because, unfortunately, simple doesn’t bring in millions of dollars so to speak. Not everyone likes all natural (or almost all natural) products. Though, I don’t see why they should dislike them.

I think you are right. To some easy means whatever they are used to and comfortable with…even if it means being in denial about the dangers of petroleum and synthetic chemicals. All we can do is be an example of positive change…and look great while doing it ;)

I didn’t make these recipes. Instead I put Honey, shea butter and vaseline, and a small amount of red food colouring. It tastes beautiful [Yes I exidently nibbled my lip XD] and instead of it drying your lips out. it nourishes them and keeps them soft. :)

Ren – that would work well, but vaseline is a petroleum product, just like gasoline is – definitely not eco-friendly, or safe for you to get inside you.

I am wondering, because I only have some ingredients right now but I really want to make my lip balm NOW, would I be able to make a lip balm out of any of the ingredients I currently have: Shea butter, Coconut oil, Olive oil, honey, or tea tree essence? I don’t have any beeswax right now and I noticed that that’s one of the ever present ingredients, but can I get away with not having that in my lip balm? Please suggest any lippies I can make without beeswax! Thank you!

You can do it without the beeswax, but you’ll have to put it in a small container with a screwtop lid on it, and it will be really runny. The beeswax is only to firm it up and let it hold its shape.

home made lip balms are the best! I just can’t use bought ones anymore.

U do know that if you make lipbalm without beeswax, not totally, but freeze it a little and it holds it’s shape if not left in the sun.

HI I LOVE MAKING LIP GLOSSES I’VE MADE ABOUT FIFTY MILLION! THEY ARE SO MUCH CHEAPER THAN BUYING THEM. I WENT TO KMART AND FOUND A LIP GLOSS THERE FOR LIKE TWELVE DOLLARS. MAKING YOUR OWN IS WAY BETTER AND I TOTALLY RECOMMEND IT. YOU COULD TRY NAMING YOUR LIP GLOSSES TOO, FOR EXAMPLE, IF ONE WAS RED YOU COULD CALL IT LIKE RUBY BLOOD, OR IF IT WAS PEACH FLAVOURED YOU COULD CALL IT PEACH PRINCESS. JUST A SUGGESTION – THIS IS WHAT I ALWAYS DO. YOU CAN ALSO MAKE HONEY-VANILLA LIP BALM, CHOCOLATE LIP BALM, MINT LIP BALM… ALL DIFFERENT KINDS!

    Hi Lisa
I am interested on learning how to make lip balm and really don’t know much about it. It seems like there are so many different recipes out there and it gets pretty confusing. Since you have made so many, do you have any suggestions on a good starter recipe. Please share any tips you have learned. Thanks -Sanju

Just an fyi…beeswax doesn’t just act to firm up the lip balm. Beeswax is very moisturizing on it’s own. My husband typically has some of the roughest hands, but when he occassionally gets beeswax on them (from working with our bee hives)they end up being extremely soft and smooth.

Because all of these ingredients are natural, how long will they last compared to off the shelf lip balms?

I have made a few different flavours for friends which they absolutely love. But they want to know how quickly they need to use it before it goes “off”.

    Thanks
