Earlier this week President Barack Obama once again made a push for energy efficieny, helping the environment, and helping the economy. On Tuesday he announced a new rebate program aimed at encouraging people to retrofit their homes with more efficient insulation and heating systems in order to save money and energy. Months ago the very successful Cash for Clunkers initiative saw people exchange their old, inefficient automobiles for newer ones. Now, Obama is tackling heat loss at home.
The Homestar program is aimed at helping out struggling Americans with a cash rebate. Upon buying certain equipment, they will receive at least $1,000 cash incentive. The equipment will save energy and save money, thereby helping those who buy it for years to come. Such products include home insulation, water heaters, AC units, windows, and roofing. Consumers could purchase these products at both large chain store, or smaller independent companies.
If consumers decide to receive a home energy audit, and make changes that will receieve energy usage by up to 20%, their rebate could be as high as $3,000.
“That was my focus last year and that is my focus this year,” Obama said in Savannah, Georgia Tuesday,
“to lay a foundation for economic growth that creates jobs.” The program is estimated to cost around $6 billion, an so far no end date has been set. The Cash for Clunkers program ran out of money and to be reinvested in due to its success, totaling around $3 billion.
To be enacted, the program needs to be approved by Congress. “I just hope Washington stands along side me in making sure we’ve got the kind of energy future that we need, ” said Obama. Should the initiative be approved, the Obama administration expects millions of households to take advantage, boosting the green industry as well as helping out Americans in tough economic times. The success of Cash for Clunkers should give momentum to Cash for Caulkers, and many are hoping to gain even further popularity through word of mouth and new media.
“When it comes to domestic policy, I have no more important job as
president than seeing to it that every American that wants to work and
is able to work can find a job,” said Obama. Once enacted, it will be great for all Americans to take advantage to help their wallets, help decrease dependency on foreign oil, and help the environment.
