Only four more days until Earth Hour 2010. Are you signed up to take part? No idea what Earth Hour is all about? Read on… Since it’s conception in 2007 people have been setting aside time where they turned off their lights for one hour to show concern for climate change. Each year from 8.30pm local time, millions of homes, companies, organizations and governments do the switching off, which cascades around the globe as the hour passes through each time zone. Since it’s conception Earth Hour has grown in leaps and bounds with more and more cities, companies and countries taking part each year
Last year, 80 million Americans and 318 U.S.
cities officially voted for action with their light switch,
joining iconic landmarks from around the world that went dark for Earth
Hour, including:
- Empire State Building
- Brooklyn Bridge
- Broadway Theater Marquees
- Las Vegas Strip
- United Nations Headquarters
- Golden Gate Bridge
- Seattle’s Space Needle
- Church of Latter-Day Saints Temple

This year a record breaking 117 countries are taking part! The Earth Hour movement doesn’t have an claims on their website to show the energy being saved worldwide for this one hour “lights off” campaign, they state that
Earth Hour does not purport to be an energy/carbon reduction exercise.
It is an
initiative to encourage individuals, businesses
and governments to take accountability
for their carbon footprint and show leadership
in climate solutions.
To take part in Earth Hour all you need do is simply turn off your lights during 8.30-9.30pm on Saturday 27th March 2010. You can sign up on their Earth Hour website to pledge your support and see what other activities and events are happening in your state, and to see if your state government are signed up.
