SunChips go green

We all know that chips aren’t really the healthiest of snacks but when faced with a choice of chips or nothing (or something even worse like candy bars) I go with the chips. SunChips are a great alternative to other chips as they are made with wholegrains, 18grams of wholegrains in fact, they have zero trans fat, zero cholesterol, they are low in salt and have 30% less fat that regular potato chips. Along with being great healthy alternative to regular potato chips they are now also making headway to being environmentally friendly too, as stated on their website and advertising they are now using 100% compostable packaging:

We dream of a world with less waste. That’s
why we’ve introduced a bag made from plants so it’s fully compostable.
Every 10 ½ oz. SunChips® package is designed to fully break down in just
14 weeks when placed in a hot, active compost bin or pile. If it takes a
little longer, don’t worry about it. Mother nature will get to it soon
enough. Truth be told, our new bag sounds a bit different than our
previous bags. That’s because plant-based materials have different sound
properties than the materials used to create our old bags. So although
this version is a little bit louder, we hope you’ll appreciate the
change and the positive environmental impact it will have.

On their website is a short video which you can view and see a sample package in a compost pile decomposing. Hopefully this encourages more people to compost, and on the SunChips website they have a Composting 101 pdf available.

Along with making strides with their compostable packaging SunChips also uses solar energy to power their Modesto production location, and this solar energy helps to produce 145,000 bags of SunChips® snacks every day. Great news for the environment! SunChips have also been making innovative use of solar for advertising too with their Solar “powered” billboard ads.

SunChips is moving forward as a pioneer with compostable packaging,
green energy and advertising. Whenever we shop as consumers we make a choice regarding which companies we buy from and support, always look for eco-friendly alternatives and determine which options are not only better for your health but also the health of the planet.
