Feminine hygiene products. There, I said it. Tampons are often made with rayon (synthetic texture made from treated plant cellulose) and/or cotton treated with pesticides and that is often chlorine bleached. Pads and pantiliners are made of the same chemical-laden materials and other adhesives and synthetic materials. These products expose women to the potentially harmful chemicals they contain which may affect their health and has a negative impact on the environment.
If you want to protect yourself from unnecessary chemicals each month, opt for organic cotton tampons and pads. Seventh Generation makes organic tampons both with an applicator and without (similar to O.B.). They disclose all ingredients in the products: tampons include organic cottton, the pantiliners are made with polyolefins, adhesives, and a silicon coated paper; the top layer is a non-woven polyolefin cover sheet which consists of chlorine free wood pulp, and the pads are made of the same ingredients as the pantiliners with the addition of a few other ingredients listed here.
An novel alternative to tampons for those open-minded women is the Diva Cup. This product is becoming more and more popular. It is a washable, reusable, latex free cup that collects menstrual flow. This type of product was invented in the 1930′s and is now being revived. Using this product can save lots of landfill waste otherwise filled up with tampons and pads… even if they are organic. There is a wealth of information and customer testimonials on the Diva Cup website.
Another option which could take a bit of getting used to is washable reusable organic cotton pads and pantiliners. There are some colorful options on ILoveMyMoon’s website. Great idea!
