Any eco-conscious person knows that bottled water is not the way to go for quenching your thirst, instead reach for that reusable water bottle. Again the eco-conscious person knows that the leading brand name for these bottles is Sigg, however one thing about Sigg is they are pretty expensive which is what deters the average person from making the switch. How many times do you hear that people WANT to be more environmentally friendly but just can’t afford it? Well this is definitely one of those situations. Thankfully however it seems that the demand for these bottles is rising and companies are taking heed and offering more competitively priced alternatives.
Environmental impacts
The average American uses 167 disposable water bottles per year (2006 figures) but only recycled 38 of those bottles! The rest end up in landfills or cluttering up parks, rivers, beaches and our oceans. Americans used 50 billion water bottles in 2006 and sent 38 billion water bottles to landfills! Clearly something is wrong with this equation!
Reusable bottles
H2Go is one such company leading the way in cheaper alternatives to Sigg with their lines of BPA free plastic bottles, and aluminum or stainless steel water bottles, but many more companies are beginning to offer alternatives! A BPA free plastic bottle can cost the same as a regular reusable water bottle with prices under $5 for some models. The metal bottles are naturally slightly more expensive but worth the initial outlay. The metal bottles come in aluminum or stainless steel, usually with plastic screw lids though sports tops are available too. Prices on the metal bottles vary but personally I’ve seen ones ranging from $7.99 and up which is a great deal for a stainless steel reusable water bottle. Check around though as we recently bought a set of two stainless steel H2Go bottles on sale at Target for just $10 which is a bargain considering a Sigg is four times that price!
Getting what you paid for
Still not convinced? Well think about bottled water next time you purchase it. Two of the leading brands in the USA are Aquafina and Dasani, did you know that both of these brands are purified municipal water. Nope they aren’t from springs or babbling brooks they are essentially just filtered tap water!
What are you waiting for? Make the switch to a more sustainable and healthy alternative to bottled water or plastic water bottles.
