Let’s take a look at last week’s current poll results first:

Paperback books seem to obviously be the most read when it comes to those who voted in this poll. E-books are a great alternative to paperbacks when it comes to the environment, however I completely understand e-books not being everybody’s favorite choice. Personally speaking, e-books aren’t the same as holding a book in your hands and I can’t seem to get into them quite as much. Two things you can do if you read paperback books, or even if you don’t, would be to support the planting of trees and to try a website called Book Crossing.

Book Crossing is a great website with a great community of people. The idea is to place a Book Crossing bookmark or something else that you can print from their website into a book that you wish to give away. From there you place the book in some random place in the city that you live in. When someone else finds it they can log onto Book Crossing’s website, enter the code that they found in the book, and everyone else on the website (including you) can see when and where the person found this book. Book Crossing is not popular everywhere, mostly in big cities where there are more people, but if more people get into it then we can continue to share our love of books without buying more paper quite as often.

And now for our eco bathroom tips !

  • Use eco toilet paper, such as the one made by Seventh Generation or Earth Friendly.
  • Clean bathroom mirrors with an eco glass cleaner like the one by Orange Mate.
  • Turn off faucet water while brushing your teeth. While this may seem like common sense there are some people who don’t consciously think about it.
  • Clean your toilet bowl with chemicals that aren’t as harsh, such as the toilet bowl cleaner put out by Clorox in their line of green products.
  • Make a a baking soda paste by mixing baking soda and water together. Taking an old toothbrush that you no longer use scrub dirty grout with the baking soda paste. This will help to clear up some of the stains that are hard to remove. If you get real lucky it might even clear up all of the stains.
  • It is said that you can clear the drain in a bathroom sink by pouring a mixture of vinegar and baking soda down the drain, closing the drain to allow it to bubble up, and then rinsing the drain with very hot water.
  • Worried about mildew and mold on your shower walls? Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray. Shake well before using. After ever shower simply lightly spray the shower walls with the vinegar and water mixture. No need to wipe. This will help to prevent mildew and mold.
  • If you choose to paint your bathroom opt for eco-friendly paint. Home Depot does carry one brand of eco-friendly paint.
  • When bathing use bar soap rather than shower gel. This will help to lower the amount of plastic bottles that you use. If you must use shower gel then be sure to recycle the shower gel bottle.
  • Have a closet in your bathroom? Place a bag or some kind of container in it. When you’re getting ready to throw away paper and plastic products place them in the bag or container in your closet instead. Once its full take it to a near by recycling bin if you have one. If you don’t have a recycling bin near by be sure to ask your city why and or what you would have to do in order to get one put in place.
