The glass globe pictured is a specially designed orb that is supposed to ward off annoying pests through the use of refracted light. The idea of blinding bugs into staying away originated, or as the story goes, with food vendors in Mexico. According to Netherlands-based designer José de la O, the owners of many outdoor taco kiosks in Mexico came up with this inivative for of chemical free pesticide based on sunlight. Jose says that they used plastic bags that had been filled with water and then hungs from the ceilings of their kiosks. The bags of water refract the light that hits it and amplifies the color. This light is also scattered all across the room and insects with very light sensitive eyes will be keen to stay away from the light dancing around the room. Perhaps the sudden brightness scares them or perhaps they just cannot handle the intensity.
Clearly, Jose has revamped the original design to create a sleek piece of art. Hang it on your porch and if it works you will have an effective insect repellent that is free of poisonous chemicals and that doesn’t use any electricity. Even if the glass orb is only mildly effective at warding off pests, the complete lack of negative side effects makes it a very eco-friendly product. Then again, you could ignore its bug repelling capabilities all together and treat the piece as purely a work of art to decorate your home.
