These glowing glass lamps are called Trap Lights because they each have a photoluminescent pigment embedded into the glass. This pigment enables the lamps to “store up” light and slowly release it, resulting in a soft glow that will last for hours after the sun has set or the light source turned off. Created by Gionata Gatto and Mike Thompson, the Trap Light will add a magical glow to a backyard or patio that reminds me a lot of cartoon renditions of mushrooms or deep-sea aquatic life. The glass lights were first created to illuminate homes without the need to consume much electricity.
“The idea is to reuse the light energy, the glass is able to absorb the energy giving off by nearby sources like sunlight, CFL, Tube lights, or LEDs due to the photoluminescent pigments within the glass, these pigments then emit light as a glow without needing to consume any additional electricity.”
Each Trap Light is masterfully hand-blown using a Murano glass blowing technique. During the process, the core of the glass is embedded with the photoluminescent pigments and then molded into the decorative shape. The finished glass lamps are placed inside a protective cage to prevent them from being damaged. A light bulb is installed so that the lamps can be “charged” even when natural light is not available. The lamps can be used without a light bulb installed in them; you simply have to insure that the lamps are exposed to light in order to achieve the beautiful glow. Depending on the intensity of the light, around 30 minutes of light to “charge” the lamp will result in up the 8 hours of warm glow.
