For all you iPhone users out there, there is a very interesting new app available you make be keen on getting. It is called Skeptical Science, and basically offers you quick and easily accessible answers to all the statements and claims made by climate change deniers.
It has been created by an Australian physicist named John Cook, who runs a website with a similar objective. Simply put, he lists the myriad of arguments used by climate change deniers, valid or otherwise, and lists right alongside the scientific counter points rebutting the arguments. It includes nearly 100 rebuttals to arguments, including “There is no consensus,” “It’s cold now,” and “It hasn’t warmed since 1998,” among many others.
According to the site, the most
frequently cited sceptic argument is “It’s the sun”. You can read Skeptical Science’s rebuttal to this particular argument online .
It is tough, however, to persuade those hard bent on denying the existence of global warming, but it is important to always stay informed and just as important to effective debate and discuss key issues. Moreover, the best way to prepare for a debate and be informed on an issue is to know the opponent’s argument inside and out. By knowing the opposition, you are not only better suited to counter an argument, but you can feel more confident and sure in your beliefs.
It is important too that those who strive to act eco friendly also act modesty. In order to get more people caring about the environment, the movement needs to be inclusive, and not seen as pompous, lofty, or driven only by those seen as arrogant intellectuals. It cannot be a political movement, as politics continues to prove most divisive in this country.
Instead use the app to stay on top of information, and in a culture where short, simple statements often last the longest in one’s memory, try and commit to using the simple summaries to bring up in conversation. Make sure, of course, to keep in mind the deeper, more complex nuances of the arguments.
