Switching our standard items with eco-friendly alternatives is a small step we can all take in reducing our carbon footprint and making the switch from standard laundry detergents to an eco-friendly alternative is a great move in the right direction. Many manufacturers are offering green laundry detergents but not all are made equal so check your labels! Choose one without phosphates (mostly phased out in laundry detergents now in the US, but double check) and without bleach. In fact detergent manufacturers aren’t required by law to disclose their ingredients on the label, so if there isn’t a list, that should send off warning bells!
One product our family has been using for many years is Trader Joe’s Liquid Laundry Detergent. The ingredients in this laundry detergent are: Plant based surfactants, earth salts, soy based fabric softener, cellulose, optical brightener, lavender oil and water.
On the bottle it states that the detergent is:
- PH balanced
- No phosphates or formaldehyde
- Contains no harsh petro chemicals
- non polluting
- suitable for all temperatures
- contains lavender essential oils for scent
- low sudsing – suitable for high efficiency washing machines
- built in fabric softener and optical brightener
- septic and greywater safe
- 100% biodegradable
- not tested on animals
- made with #2 plastic (highly suitable for recycling)
The 53 fl oz bottle claims to contain enough detergent to wash at least 26.5 loads of laundry. The label states to use 2 fl oz for a full load, filling the cap to the middle line, but for front loading machines use half that amount. Yet another benefit of the newer energy star front loading washing machines! The Trader Joe’s Liquid Laundry detergent it is a concentrated product though, and we easily get more loads than the 26.5 stated. We all know that the average family uses far too much detergent
in their laundry washing so through trial and error find a measure that works for you. The product smells divine being lavender oil scented, though quite pungent in the bottle, once diluted into the laundry wash it is a very subtle scent, which is in our families opinion much better than the regular over scented, artificial detergent scents. One thing I love about Trader Joe’s products is that they offer great natural eco-friendly products but at regular brand prices. One thing I hear all the time when people try and make better eco-friendly choices is that it’s so expensive! Sure some brands are, but shop around and find one that fits your budget and also lowers your carbon footprint. As I said we’ve used this detergent for years and would recommend it to
anyone thinking of switching to a natural green laundry detergent.
