This week 16th-22nd April is Earth Week which is the week leading up to the ultimate celebration for the eco-friendly people Earth Day on the 22nd April. Starting in Philadelphia in 1970, Earth Week was created by a committee of students,
professionals, leaders of grass roots organizations and businessmen
concerned about the environment. The Earth Week Committee of
Philadelphia concluded that devoting only one day to the environment
would not provide enough time and space to paint a comprehensive picture
of the environmental issues confronting mankind. Many cities worldwide now extend the observance of Earth Day to the entire week. These week long events are designed to encourage environmentally-aware behaviors,
such as recycling, using energy efficiently, and reducing or reusing
disposable items.
Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22. The United Nations celebrates Earth Day each year on the spring equinox, which is often 20 March. tradition which was founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969. The first governmental recognition of Earth Day, authorized by the city San Francisco, was on the spring equinox in 1970. Again as with Earth Week events are held in multiple cities around the country celebrating the Earth and encouraging good stewardship.
Earth Day and Earth Week are great times of year for any person to start becoming more aware of their impact on the environment as it’s an annual environmental celebration and you can track your progress year on year. Millions of people worldwide join in with the celebrations of Earth Day and festivities usually include a City Earth Day environmental expo where residents can find out more information about eco-friendly resources in their local neighborhood.
Whether you choose this day to finally get on board with climate change and our impact on the environment, make plans to conserve energy for environmental and economical reasons or you take a few minutes to take the carbon footprint test then make a plan for the year (or more) ahead to work on reducing your carbon footprint Earth Day is a great time to start thinking about making these changes, especially long term changes! Imagine taking the carbon footprint test each Earth Day and watching your result lower each year! Awesome!
