Cell Phones for Haiti

Many people around the world continue to watch in shock at the horror that is still unfolding in Haiti. We all wait as the outpouring of good will and aid slowly arrives and is distributed in the ravaged country.  Donations have been paramount, with the Red Cross reporting unprecedented support.  Money is being sent in many ways and forms, and awareness and charity has been seen in every community in life.

It is an organization that will take old and used cell phone and donate their worth in dollars to the Red Cross, which will go towards helping Haitians. The company, ReCellular, estimates that as many as 130 million cell phones are retired each year.  If people take the time to find any unused ones, a great deal of money can be raised to help Haitians rebuild their lives.

Phones for Haiti makes the act very simple. Firstly, they take cell phones of all types and qualities. Of course, the better quality and the newness will garner a great monetary worth. However, all phones are worth something and any money raised is positive.  Secondly, the website offers prepaid shipping labels so the act is free and easy. It is a great example of recycling being put to use, and a great cause of which to support. ReCellular cleans up the old cell phones and sells them in developing countries. All the money made off the sales goes directly to Haitians.

There is very little that most of us can do.   But these simple acts of donating money and taking time to recycle can a go long way, and we have already begun to see how just a few simple acts by an individuals adds up to serious action.
