Mud Bricks Return with MecoPress

The construction of homes from mud and earth has long been a traditional technique that builds warm and eco friendly dwellings from locally available resources. Created by MecoConcept, this Hydraulic Compressor, known as the MecoPress, can manufacture a solid brick from mud in about 30 seconds. The LEGO like shape on the bricks allow then to be used quickly and efficiently, even in regions that have been victim to a natural disaster. Using the MecoPress, materials like locally found soil, clay, and silt are used to form each brick. Cement is often added to the mixture to add strength and cohesion to the forms. Creating each brick in around 30 seconds, the press can be useful in constructing simple builds where material demand is minimal. To improve the portability of the press and its potential use in disaster relief efforts, the press can potentially be powered from solar energy.

The most significant and sustainable characteristic of the bricks formed by the MecoPress is that they are made from natural and locally available materials. There is little need to ship materials from thousands of miles away to be used at a work site and any excess materials can be returned to the environment, dramatically reducing the impact of construction. Plus, mud brick houses are much better at staying cool in the summer and warm in the winter than there wooden-framed counterparts. The key is the high quantity of biomass contained in mud brick homes, an important characteristic for temperature regulation in structures. The MecoPress makes it possible to manufacture consistent and high quality bricks, ready to be used in an eco-home.
