Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is the process of using millions of gallons of water, sand, and a chemical cocktail to break up organic-rich shale in order to release natural gas resources. Deborah Kittner is a University of Cincinnati doctoral student in geography who’s research has examined the fracking industry in Pennsylvania, known as the “sweet spot” for this resource due to its abundance of natural gas. Pittsburgh and Buffalo, N.Y, has outlawed fracking within city limits due to concerns over chemical leaks which could contaminate groundwater, wells, and other water resources.
The EPA is currently researching the relationship between hydraulic fracturing and drinking water and groundwater after congress voiced concerns about the potential negative affects the process may have on water quality and public health. Unfortunately, the EPA is as already spread too thin to effectively address the environmental concerns of the whole United States. As well, the EPA is as susceptible to the pressures of special interests as Congress.
Proponents of fracking will argue that the chemical cocktail used in the fracking process is relatively small. The mixture, which is composed of 95-percent water, nearly five percent sand, and the rest chemical, contains known toxins and carcinogens. Arguing that this small fraction of chemicals is insignificant is like arguing that a hamburger that is only 0.1% deadly E-coli is perfectly safe. Furthermore, the study of hydrology is still not well understood. Once harmful chemicals have entered the groundwater, it is impossible to remove them or to even predict where they will go.
The website for GasLand is a great source for learning more. The documentary will also explain the story behind the image.
