Thoma Holtz GmbH, a German construction company, has taken the age-old tradition of building from wood and begun the construction of technologically superior and environmentally friendlier buildings and homes. Thoma’s company philosophy acknowledges one major challenge of the 21st century: to harness the forces of globalization and ever-faster technical development, and to put these forces to good use without the detriment of humans or nature. Thoma’s belief in a social consciousness has led them to seek solutions to constructing buildings which are not only technically superior but socially and environmentally responsible.
Thoma constructs their buildings with inspiration from nature. Thoma utilizes their patented Holtz100 construction system which allows for better, healthier, and safer buildings and living environments. The Holtz100 living system allows Thoma to build with wood in a technologically superior manner. The Holtz100 design has set records in thermal insulation and decrement factor, protects against electromagnetic radiation, has twice the sound insulation, and provides a superior interior environment for the buildings. Furthermore, Thoma does not treat their timber or use any other synthetic chemical during processing, thus they are able to reduce the primary energy consumption of construction by 50-80%. In addition, Thoma can offer people a healthier living environment. Thoma’s timber is naturally renewable and obtained only from well managed, sustainable forests, and the timber is able to combat global warming (timber stores CO2).
Thoma has set a goal to co-operate with regional companies to make them more profitable and integrate them into the Holtz100 network. The Holtz100 Franchise System allows forestry owners, sawmills, producers, architects, and clients the opportunity to build locally with local timber. This leads to the development of new jobs, as well as the added value and partnerships in many parts of the world, including Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Japan, and the United States.
Thoma offers training programs for existing and future partners within the Holtz100 network to learn about the benefits of sustainable construction with timber. Thoma has been awarded numerous prizes for their innovative construction, including “Austria’s Most Sustainable Industrial Concern” prize in 2001, and the German “Timber Creativity Prize 2000” for being a company with the most innovative timber building system with the greatest potential.
