You may end up with a sore arm after a long day of hiking, but you better believe that the energy generated and used by a shake flashlight is clean and eco-friendly. There are several companies that produce their own version including Gaiam and OmegaLight, but the general concept remains the same; as the copper coil moves past the magnet in the handle, a small electrical current in generated and stored for later use. I doubt these little flashlights are going to save the planet, but eliminating the need to buy (and therefore throwaway) batteries should be incentive enough to spring for this handy tool.
All it takes is ten seconds of shaking and the flashlight will stay lit for about two minutes; two minutes of arm exercise and you’ll have yourself half an hour of light. Never again will you climb out of your tent at 3 in the morning to relieve yourself, find that your flashlight has died during the cold night, and have to wonder slowly through the dark because the moon has decided to stay behind the clouds.
Usually weighing less than a pound, the shake flashlight is perfect for the hiker on the go. The flashlight would certainly fit anyone’s need for emergency lighting as well. Store it away in a cabinet and the unit can be charged in second, whenever you need it.
